How does your Doctor Treat You?

My wonderful doctor moved to Oregon this summer. I say wonderful because he treated me like a friend. He shook my hand, ask how I was doing, and wanted to know had there been any changes in my life. (At my age there are always changes.)

My new doctor is younger, but she spent most of our first visit looking at her computer screen not me. She did glance at my hand when I told her it hurt because of a bruise. But afterwards I felt the same way I do when I take my car into the shop and read magazines while the mechanics takes care of it.

Modern doctors don't seem to know that a man's health reaches beyond the little examining room in the doctors office. The sum of a person's life cannot be squeezed into a computer file. On my next visit to the doctor I plan to tell her everything starting with that I'm gay and with a partner of 19 years. That should raise awareness. If she starts to nod off, I'll touch my chest and say I'm having a little pain. That should get attention.
