Why do State Politicians Yield to the Vocal Minority?

Over fifty percent of US Citizens now accept same sex marriage. In all likelihood the US Supreme Court will make it legal next month. Mainline churches are supporting gay people, and big business are championing their rights. (Businesses like Apple, which has more money than the US Treasury) has an openly gay CEO). Among young people under thirty, 74% support same sex marriage. The tipping point has come.

Yet in the State Houses the representative of the people are more interested in following the right wing religionists. We saw what happened in Indiana when both the governor and the Legislators backtracked a homophobic law and wrote a new one in record time when pressure came from the businesses to do the right thing.

Walmart with home offices in Arkansas shook some sense into that state's governor before he signed a homophobic bill. In Georgia an anti gay bill was heading towards becoming a law when business people in Atlanta said it was cost the city $15,000,000 a year. The law died quickly. But the Louisiana Governor (who wants to live in the White House) couldn't wait to get his hand on a pen to sign an anti gay bill into law where the biggest city in his state (New Orleans) is one of the gayest cities in the country, not to mention in dire need of tourist dollars.

In the US democracy is no longer determined by the desires of the majority but rather by those with this loudest mouths, the great political ambitions, or the biggest bank accounts. Perhaps we should change the motto on all our money to: "In Mouths we Trust" or "In Motives we Trust," or probably more accurate "In Money we Trust."

People are saying it is time for a new revolution, not against enemies beyond our borders, but against those within.
