Americans Pushing Back on Crazy Christians

A Florida woman had had enough and took action against a neighborhood church billboard sign that read: "Homosexuals must repent or go to hell." When the preacher refused to talk with her, she started a local petition requesting the church to remove the bigoted message. Hundred responded and then the petition went national. The church dug in and refused to remove it until its weekly time for posting messages. In the mean time, the church members and pastor got an ear full of complaints. (Above: Sometimes church signs are more risible than religious.)

The right wing conservative (and maybe some of the wannabe presidents) would claim this is an infringement on freedom of religion and an attack on Christianity. Not so. Suppose the church sign had said that African Americans were going to hell if they didn't repent? Or Asians? Or Roman Catholics? Or Mexicans? Or Presbyterians? These words are far different from a church saying all people, including straights, need to repent. Targeting one group sounds like and is bigotry. It is a not so subtle appeal to people of a homophobic nature.

Remember the good old days when churches did not have bulletin boards on their front lawns? The trouble with bulletin boards, beside looking tacky, is that someone has to come up with something to put on them every week, and the challenge is to write a witty or eye catching message. More often than not, they end up being neither funny nor relevant.
