Everyone old enough remembers where he was when Kennedy was shot in 1963, but how many gay people remember where they were when they heard of the Stonewall riots on June 28, 1969, at a Gay NYC bar? I'll never forget. I was in the New York theater district watching Broadway Plays. "What the hell are those gay people doing?" I asked myself. In 1969 just being gay was illegal and a fair target for polices' nightsticks (their phallic tool). I was sure it would all be over by the next night.

It was not. For the first time in recorded history gay people stood up to the corrupt organization (a mafia owned gay bar that paid off the NY police who periodically made raids "to show" they were doing their job.) Whoever threw that first beer container at the police (many say it was a drag queen) had no idea he/she was starting the American Gay Revolution.

I didn't know it either, and to my eternal regret, I kept on watching plays, while the biggest USA gay drama ever was taking place a few miles away and could be seen live for the cost of a subway token.
