To Ron: I'm celebrating Christmas at home recovering from a fall and concussion 17 days ago. Bill
From Ron: Bill, People, even doctors take falling for seniors for granted. Often there is a reason that can be remedied, starting with the tenancy to drag one's feet. Partner reminds me to pick up my toes when I walk. Another thing is that wearing no shoes inside gives one more foot control. You can't go barefooted at the grocery store, but leaving you shoes at the door at home is a good habit.
Meds can be a problem. I had three falls last year, one could have been deadly by only a few inches. It turns out my thyroid meds were not strong enough, and I was having mini blackouts on my feet. I'm happy I wasn't driving a car. The doctor changed the dosage, and I haven't had a problem since.
Having grab bars in your tub and shower are an absolutely a must for all Seniors.
I think it is most important to find the cause of the falls and take measures, if possible, to avoid them again. We may be aging, but we still have a brain to help protect our bodies.
