The gay community in Scotland has a tradition of asking people in their country "to turn purple" for a day, and the occasion becomes a time for partying and drinking Scotland's favorite and famous beverage. Even some churches turn on the purple lights ( See photo at left.)

In the US for some years in New York the Empire State Building has turned on the purple lights on Pride Day. Even the White House became rainbow colored with lights when the Supreme Court legalized gay marriage.

While Scotland has been a leader in gay issues including same sex marriage, gay Scots say that education is still needed in the public schools where some bullying persists.

In every aspect of life the want of a good education is felt, none better seen than eradicating the removal of prejudice against people of color, non-natives, and gay people.

Let us hope the world will soon follow Scotland's lead in lighting up for one day a year in purple and in recognition of the acceptance and equality of all people regardless of their color, national origin, or with whom they sleep.
