Valley of the damned: Ozzie Lads Raped by Priests

A new low in child molestation will make headlines in Australia this week as procedures begin against both the Anglican Church and the Roman Catholic Church. In Hunter Valley, the game of "spotlighting," supposedly a week of camping for boys, turned into a sexual opportunity of rape of the lads by none other than priests from both Protestant and Catholic clergy. And it has been going on for some time in all parts. A lot of people, straight and gay, have wrongly assumed that the enormous amount of child molestations of youths by clergymen have been cases where a young boy got his first oral sex, evoking a "What the heck? He got his first blowjob." response. Not so. Many of these lads were raped. Anally assaulted. Some of these "men of god" were not even gay.

As a former clergyman, my first response has always been: "What were these men thinking?" Now I've moved to an equally disturbing question: "Is there something in the religious experience that leads people to doing despicable things?" The current violence in the Islamic faith comes to mind, not only by terrorists abroad, but also by the way they treat women at home and youths who experiment in sex with other boys. They hang them.

Christianity has a sordid history of burning people at the stake and torturing heretics on the rack. The most religious group on these shores, the Puritans hanged or drowned women they thought to be witches.

Again, what in the psychic of religion leads some people to murder, torture, and rape? None of these things would be imaginable to the Christian founder who taught love, forgiveness, and fairness for all people. (Your comments are welcome in the Forums.)
