The world never seems to tire of pondering the mysterious smile of the famous "Mona Lisa" by gay 15th Century Italian painter Leonardo da Vinci. For five hundred years people have continue to ask who that woman was and queuing up at the Louvre in Paris to see her portrait. Yet another suggestion has been set forward by Silvano Vinceti, head of the National Committee for Cultural Heritage, who believes that the "Mona Lisa" bears several striking similarities to Gian Giocomo Caprotti, known as Salai who was a young male model (and likely lover of da Vinci). So the most famous painting history is a guy in drag?

Before dismissing this latest theory, take a look at some of the other da Vinci paintings of his young male model like "St. John the Baptist" where the Mona Lisa features are obvious. And don't miss "Angel Incarnate" showing da Vinci's bed-mate nude and with an erection. (These paintings can be viewed by clicking on da Vinci Art, and in the General Forum below.)

It boggles the mind to think that the truth behind Mona Lisa's enigmatic smile was she was no lady, but a man instead.
