Do Older People Get More or Less Religious?

Conventional wisdom paints a picture of older people going to church, mass, or temple with great regularity. Grandpa has a Bible by his rocking chair, and Grandma finds her way to church whenever the doors are open.

Religion is a touchy subject, but all things remain open for discussion in a free society, yet in the end, we can only speak and have a right to speak personally.

This week I got a letter from the Seminary where I got a B. of Divinity Degree many moons ago. The school invited me to "A Day at the Seminary" where they promised a tour, a box lunch, and sermons in the morning and afternoon, all for only $25. OMG! I'd rather go to a dentist and suffer for an hour than all day making nice with strangers, remembering not to swear, and listening to sermons. Not even if they paid me would I have attended.

When people ask me where I go to church, I tell them truthfully there is not a Presbyterian Church within 40 miles and that all the local ones are far too conservative. I want to add they are emotionally unstable and intellectually vapid, which is true, but I guess some people need that kind of belief to get through. This puts me in the group of the less religious as I plow toward a new decade.

I would enjoy reading the comments of other men of any age. Please feel free to post your views in the Apollo Forums below.
