Someone had to do, that is write a manual book for men coming out late. Actually, the book was not so much written as collecting the stories of gay men who kept their secret until their 40s or 50s. It's called Fashionably Late: Gay, Bi, and Trans Men Who Came Out Later in Life.

(At Left: Sean Haynes of "Will and Grace" fame who later said, "I always felt I owed the gay community a huge apology for coming out too late.")

We understand of societal reasons that gay men stay closeted so long, but these days as acceptance of gay people spreads, less young people will feel a need to closet themselves in traditional jobs and institutions that keep them from being themselves. You might not know it from the negative blabbering and actions of current US President wannabes, but even the Republican Party has cracked the door to gay people on a "if you behave yourself" invitation. Still it's a crack that can only widen.

On Apollo we have been dealing with coming out late in life for the last 18 years. We never thought to write a book, mainly because we've always guaranteed men's privacy on this site. We don't give out emails or names of users, much less their stories unless they choose to post them in the Apollo Library. There are some excellent ones you can read in our Library and save you the $25 price of the book.

Also, we invite you to post your own coming out story for the enjoyment and encouragement of those who are still dealing with an uncomfortable closet. Look at the main menu bar above and click on Library.
