hat a sight these pictures must have been for gays who had served in the Navy!  Photos like these brought back memories of buddies with whom they had or wanted to have had sex.  Notice the sequence.  The buddies are standing suggestively, one leaning familiarly on the other.  Then they move to semi-wresting poses which overtly imply sex with one behind the other.  Finally, they are back in their sailor hats, and both are smoking cigarettes.  Smoking was a popular gimmick in the 1940 movies following the sex act which, due to censorship, was not permitted to be shown.  (Even married couples had twin beds in movies and television!)  However, if a couple were smoking together with starry eyes, you knew they had had sex!  The implication of sex between these sailors was not lost on viewers in the mid 20th Century.
