US Congress makes a stab at ending DADT
Posted by: Ron @ Saturday, May 29th 2010 @ 09:07:25 AM EST

Much ado has been made of the US Congress passing a bill to end the policy of gay people serving opening in the military, but hold your fireworks and celebrations. The bill gives the Pentagon all the time it needs in deciding when to put this into effect. Probably a lot of us could be dead when DADT is dead.

Two points to consider:

  • Polls show that about 80 percent of the American people now support ending DADT. Apparently, it take over 3/4 of the population before the US Congress can grow a set and pass a bill. Think about 75%. That means at least half the Americans in the Republican Party want this bill which the US congress is loath to pass. All the negative votes came from Republicans. Question: Whom does the US Congress represent? The people or themselves?

  • The Military will decide? So when did the US military take over the laws and wishes of the US people? Have the Washington politicians turned us into a military state when we were not looking? Last time I looked, the Constitution gives Congress the right to pass laws and makes the President the Commander in Chief of the military. What's going with our Constitutional government.

It's time for every American, straight or gay, to write his/her Congressman.
