Ten years ago, a soldier in England could be discharged from the military for being gay, but now gay soldiers can marry other gay men. A ground breaking wedding was recently held in the mess of England most prestigious regiment, The Household Cavalry (these are the guys who escort the Queen and who fight in Iraq). In the USA this would be like having a gay wedding at the Marine Barracks at 8th and I Streets in Washington, DC.
Not only were Lance Corporal James Wharton and Thom McCaffrey married, the entire regiment (except those still in Iraq) were there to celebrate the event. The other soldiers referred to it as the gay event of the year.
Meanwhile back in the the homophobic US military, a General said that if DADT is removed, then he will insist that gay marines will not be allowed to sleep with straight marines.* If he had said that black and white soldiers should not sleep in the same room, he would have been kicked out of the service. In many ways, gay people will continue to be treated like inferior people until the USA military catches up with other enlightened western western countries.

*It is not clear whether the General did not trust the gay or the straight soldiers to initiate sex.
