Has the Stonewall Revolt Ended?
Posted by: Ron @ Monday, July 13th 2009 @ 08:28:15 AM EST

Full credit must be given to the cross dressing gay men who tossed the first beer bottles at the NYC Police in 1969 thus starting a gay revolution that rolled across the nation, if not around the world. The policemen were at first stunned. This was not the way "perverts" were supposed to behave. They should quietly take their police brutality, be arrested, pay their fines, and be ready for to do it all over again in six months. But everything changed at the Stonewall Bar in the summer of 1969. Gay people began to fight back.

Are gay people fighting back these days? A few years ago a gay man was killed in a gay bar in Roanoke, Virginia. The gay community rallied, and swift justice was enacted by city officials.

But now have gay people become so sure of their rights that they are willing to let any slight or indignity be overlooked?

In El Paso, Texas, why has not the gay community made a scene at the restaurant where two men kissed and were ejected and treated shamefully by the police? The chief of police explained that the arresting policemen were new and not aware of their job responsibilities. Someone should ask the city of El Paso if their firemen are also poorly trained for their jobs. And what about their EMS medics? Are city workers all involved in on-the-job training?

This kind of political hogwash will continue unless gay people stand up for their rights and confront their elected officials.

Why are the gay people of El Paso not having a "kiss in" demonstration at the offending restaurant? Why don't they take out an ad in the local paper saying that the restaurant is the new gay hang out place? A mob of soda drinking gay people would do the trick of bringing forth an apology. Any straight businessman will eat any amount of crow to peacefully rid himself of a gaggle of gays. And think how fun it would be.

We live in a society where gay advancement no longer requires throwing beer bottles at the police. We can now use our votes, our money, and our political action to advance to fruition our full civil rights.
