It Cannot Happen Here!

Gay people are currently riding a wave of success that everyone thinks (including me) will eventually land them safely on the shores of full civil liberties. It is a happy and positive thought, but not an informed one. It blatantly ignores that there remains strong political, cultural, and religious opposition to gay people at home and abroad. This opposition is in no way ready to roll over and give up their nasty fight about full civil rights for everyone.

  • In this week’s news we find that the Muslim community in Bosnia is strongly demanding that gay people be denied the right to have their first Pride Parade next month. As experience has revealed, Muslim ire can be both bloody and deadly.
  • In Senegal (Africa) a gay couple who married in Belgium was sentence to two years in jail for getting marrying.
  • In Florida conservative groups are determined to put an anti gay amendment on the November ballot despite continued punishing hurricanes from Jove.
  • The next US President is likely to appoint three Supreme Court Judges who could reverse and set back both women and gay rights for years to come.

It is never safe to assume our vindication until the flag of freedom flies high and clearly for all to see. To do this we must constantly remember that there is more ignorance in the world than intelligence. There is more hate than love. There is more war than peace. There is more anger than understanding.

The truth is that bad things can and do happen in the homeland of gay people wherever they live, and that we must ever be diligent and actively doing whatever we can to reach a place where all people are treated equally regardless of their religious, political, or sexual preference.
