Network Ignores Gay Olympian
Posted by: Ron @ Tuesday, August 26th 2008 @ 08:56:56 AM EST

NBC TV can hardly be called anti gay. The network made millions of dollars on the long running "Will & Grace" show, a program that broke new grounds in presenting gay people and their problems as a part of the fabric of our American society. (At Right: NBC Logo. Line by Jack from Will & Grace: "The Network is gay. For god's sake, its logo is a peacock.")

Yet when Australian Matthew Mitcham took the Olympian Gold Metal in diving, no mention was made on air that he was the only openly gay male athlete in the Games. NBC also did not show his family or his lover in the stands as is usually the custom at such a momentous event.

What’s going on here? The story is news that is too good to ignore, but why did the network ignore it? There is only one explanation, no matter how bizarre it may sound. NBC Network was "dragon handled" by the Chinese government which did not want it made public that a gay man broke their otherwise perfect diving record at the Games.

Clearly NBC caved in to the wishes of the host country. There is no other sane explanation, and unless NBC publicly refutes this claim and/or makes up for its gross insult to Mitcham in particular and the gay community in general, we must continue to believe the culpability of NBC in this matter.
