Obesity is on people's mind this week (as well as on their bodies) In an unprecedented move the city of Los Angeles voted to refuse new licenses to fast food restaurants for a year in a poorer section of the city where obesity is running rampant or rather sitting still on oversize bodies. At this point the mayor has not signed the bill into law.
There is much discussion about this draconian action with accusation of governmental sanctions overstepping its boundaries, but this is exactly what happened when the government forced the makers of tobacco to put on their product that usage was dangerous to one's health.
TIME Magazine jumped on the treadmill and published a medical report saying that the previously recommended 30 minutes of exercise three times a week was not enough to effect weight loss. Doctors are upping the time to an hour, and for seriously overweight people are upping the frequency to five times a week. They are also recommending a daily diet of between 1200 and 1500 calories.
The above standards are obviously set for younger people. The average age of Apollo Network men is fifty or higher. Running or swimming five hours a week is not an option for the average older man.
There are two exercises that are safe and effective for most of us: Walking and pushing our chairs back from the table. I'm working on these two, and I hope you are, too.
