A bill to legalize gay marriage in Britain has passed a crucial hurdle in parliament, despite efforts by the majority of politicians from Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservative party to wreck the plans. (At Right: Lad in a kilt for no other reason than showing a lad in a kilt.)

Members of the House of Commons on Tuesday voted by 366 to 161 in favor of the same sex marriage bill, which will now go to the country's upper house for consideration.

The bill is likely to face strong opposition when it is debated in the House of Lords next month, especially from the 26 bishops holding seats in the assembly.

Cameron was forced to make a deal with the opposition Labor party to pass the bill as many members of his own party had looked to prevent it from passing.

Meanwhile, to the north in Scotland, the country's major religious group, the Presbyterians, has approved allowing gay ministers to be ordained and serve. Doubtlessly, John Knox is spinning in his dusty grave, but the time has come to bury primitive prejudices with the unenlightened thinking of yesteryear. Theologically speaking, if the Presbyterians are right about predestination, then gay acceptance was predestined to be so.
